OVERVIEW

ALL SKILL LEVELS WELCOME FROM BEGINNER TO ADVANCED!

Player Evaluations will happen late April to determine team placement.  ALL 14U PLAYERS must attend evaluations. All players will be on a team - generally we have 1 14UA team and 1-2 14UB teams. Team placement announcements will be made by Sunday, April 28th.

Practices will start the first week of May, right after player evaluations. Teams generally practice 2 weeknights per week. Some coaches may schedule extra weeknight practices depending on game schedules and coaches’/players’ availability.

League play is anticipated to start as early as Monday, June 3rd, and end the last week of July. Games are played on weeknight evenings Monday through Thursday with about half the games being AWAY games. 14U State Tournament games run through the weekend of July 27-28.

A local weekend tournament is also planned for River Valley Rumble in Shakopee on June 7-9. We may have some opportunities for a few weekend scrimmages as we gear up for the season.  See more details below about tournaments.

PRACTICE PLAYER OPTION:

If your player is new to lacrosse and wants to learn the skills but not participate in competitive game play, being a Practice Player might be an option for him.  Keep in mind, though, that we have several new players at all age levels, so it’s definitely OK to be a beginner as a regular player.  Please contact VP of Boys (vpboys@edinalacrosse.com) if interested in the Practice Player option.  Registration fee is adjusted for Practice Players.

UNIFORMS

Our uniform ordering process has changed this year. Registration fees do not include uniforms. Instead, upon close of registration, an email will be sent to all registered players with link and directions for ordering uniforms directly from Squad Locker. You will pay for uniforms directly to Squad Locker and they will be sent directly to your house.

Required Uniform Pieces ($96.90):

1 jersey $55.95

1 pair of shorts $39.95

GEAR

Full protective equipment is required per USA Lacrosse:  lacrosse helmet, non-tethered mouth guard, chest protector NOCSAE certified for the prevention of commotio cordis, elbow pads, gloves, protective cup, cleats, water bottle, and lacrosse stick for position. ELA will lend out goalie equipment - throat guard, chest protector, goalie stick to interested players signing up to play goalie.

REMINDER: Chest protectors must be NOCSAE certified for the prevention of commotio cordis as of 1/1/22.  Please see details at  https://www.edinalacrosse.com/boyslacrossegear.

14U EVALUATIONS- mandatory!

14U will have player evaluations to determine team placement in late April (timing/location TBA - will entail 2 sessions). There will be (1) A-Team and (1) or (2) balanced B-Teams – all players will be assigned to a team.  Optional preseason clinics (by positions) may be offered as a tune-up for 14U players prior to evaluations – more details and registration will be provided later this winter.

GOALIES- discount offered!

14U dedicated goalies are needed!  Equipment is provided. A 50% registration discount will be given – PRIOR to completing registration, please contact us at VPBOYS@EDINALACROSSE.COM to get a discount code to use.  ELA goalies receive additional goalie specific training during the season. Teams that do not have a dedicated goalie will need to have players rotate as goalies during games.

TOURNAMENTS

Each 14U team will participate in an additional Twin Cities Metro weekend tournament during the season. The 14U registration fee covers the cost of a tournament. Currently we anticipate participating again in the Shakopee River Valley Rumble tournament, the weekend of June 7-9 2024. More details will be shared once finalized.

We are also hoping to send a team to a travel tournament in the upper Midwest (Madison/Milwaukee area or Greater Chicago area most likely).  This is a great tradition, especially for our 8th graders, as a capstone experience to their youth lacrosse days.  More details to come on this - there will be a separate registration fee to cover the Midwest tournament fees.  Families would cover their own travel costs.  (We are balancing lacrosse club team tournament timing with tournament availability to avoid conflicts).

SEASON TIMELINE OVERVIEW:

1. OPTIONAL PRESEASON CLINICS (by positions) may be offered as a tune-up for 14U players prior to evaluations – more details and registration will be provided later this winter.

2.  EVALUATIONS:  2 SESSIONS IN LATE APRIL (TIMING/LOCATION TBA)

Our league, Youth Lacrosse MN (YLM), requires (1) A-Team and balanced B-Teams at the Boys 14U Age Level.  As a result, ALL 14U PLAYERS must attend evaluations.  Every player will be on a team!  Optional preseason clinics (by positions) may be offered as a tune-up for 14U players prior to evaluations – more details and registration will be provided later this winter.

  • Team assignments will be announced by April 28th.

  • More details will be sent about evaluations after registration closes.

3.  PRACTICES START THE FIRST WEEK OF MAY

Practices will be 2 weeknights per week - 1.5 hours per practice for 14U. May schedules will be available once coaching and field times have been finalized. June and July practice schedules will be determined in late May after the June/July game schedules have been announced by the league.

4.  PRESEASON SCRIMMAGES

During May, we will look for opportunities to do some preseason scrimmages with other area lacrosse associations.  More details to come.

5.  REGULAR SEASON GAME PLAY - JUNE & JULY

Regular season games will occur in June and July. The schedule will be announced in late May by the league.

  • The first game could be as early as Monday, June 3.

  • Expect 1-2 games per week - some in Edina, some in other areas of the Twin Cities.  Games are scheduled on weeknight evenings Mon-Thu. 14U will have 10 regular season games - 5 home games.

  • State Tournament: All 12U & 14U teams (A and B levels) will participate in the state tournament. Dates are set for the weekend of July 27-28, 2024 for the YLM Championship.

6. RIVER VALLEY RUMBLE TOURNAMENT- June 7-9

7. POSSIBLE UPPER MIDWEST TOURNAMENT (Madison/Milwaukee area or Greater Chicago area most likely)- Tournament and dates TBD.  This is a great tradition, especially for our 8th graders, as a capstone experience to their youth lacrosse days.  More details to come on this - there will be a separate registration fee to cover the tournament fees.  Families would cover their own travel costs.  (We are balancing lacrosse club team tournament timing with tournament availability to avoid conflicts).

FAMILY VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT

Edina Lacrosse Association is a non-profit volunteer run organization. Without family volunteers, we cannot function.  Each summer season one adult family member from each family must volunteer at least one time for at least one of the following:

  • Team Manager (1 per team).  This is a team’s communication liaison between the coach and parents, plans tournament needs/communications, ensures game volunteers are assigned and plans in-season and end-of-season fun. Please note your interest in this position during your registration.  Training will be provided.

  • Parents interested in assisting coaches are also welcome!  If interested, please note on your registration. Lacrosse experience is helpful, but not necessary. New volunteer assistant coaches will be paired with experienced program and head coaches.

  • Scoreboard operator during home games and scrimmages (ALL families, on rotation)

  • Game clock operator during home games and scrimmages (ALL families, on rotation)

  • Field set-up for home games (ALL families, on rotation)

BOYS 14U GENERAL OVERVIEW

  • Ages: Typically 7th-8th graders.  Birthdate requirements are communicated with each registration.  ELA adheres to US Lacrosse age guidelines.
  • As with all of our programs, our goal is for our players to enjoy lacrosse, while working on team work and lacrosse skills at the same time.  Focus is on lacrosse skill development, particularly stick skills, fundamentals of game play and overall lacrosse IQ.  At the 14U age level, we gear player development on specific positions - Attack, Midi, Modified Long Pole Defense, Defense and Goalie.  We focus on getting players prepared to eventually play high school lacrosse if interested.  Game play is on a full sized field - 9 v 9 plus a goalie.  ELA will generally give a registration discount to players willing to be full-time goalies - goalie equipment can be borrowed from ELA (throat guard, chest pad, goalie stick, etc.).
  • Spring Box Lacrosse Season:  Because of the fast pace and high number of passes and plays players are involved in Box Lacrosse, ELA has incorporated Box Lacrosse into its core player development programs.  The season, starting late February and running through early April, will include weekly games on Saturdays or Sundays (will require some travel in the Twin Cities Metro) and weekly practices.  Registration launches in early December.
  • Main Field Lacrosse Season:  The main season is our spring/summer program.  It's a travel league that starts in May and runs through July; involves 1-2 evening practices per week, plus 1-2 games within the Twin Cities metro (half are generally home games).  Generally a 3-4 night commitment.  Optional tournaments are available, which will require separate registrations and fees.
    • Tryouts will happen pre-season to determine the roster for 1 A-Level Team and a few balanced B-Level Teams.  In order to be considered for an A-Level Team, players and their parents must sign a player commitment agreement to ensure excellent show-up rates for practices and games.
    • Practice Players - may be an option for 14U players new to lacrosse, depending upon interest level.  Practice Players are part of a travel team, but they only participate in practices.  Geared for players who are interested in learning more about lacrosse but not ready for the commitment of a travel team.
    • Registration generally launches in January for the upcoming summer.
    • Uniforms required and ordered separately via Squad Locker link to be sent out after registration closes.
    • Tournaments: Teams typically play in 1 or 2 weekend tournaments during the season. Tournament registration fees usually included in program registration, but sometimes require separate registration and fee.
    • 14U A-Team players have a summer tradition of participating in the Pipe City Tournament in Chicago.  Details will be communicated each season for those interested in this fun lacrosse opportunity!
  • Fall Season:  The fall program can vary.  It may be a weekly clinic format, or it may be a fall travel league.  Registration generally launches in July for the upcoming fall.
  • Winter Season: The winter program is a weekly clinic to keep players engaged in lacrosse.  Registration generally launches in early November.
  • Full Lacrosse Equipment Required: lacrosse helmets, mouth guards, chest pads with shoulder guards, elbow pads, gloves, cup, cleats, stick, water bottle.
  • Coaches:  Head Coaches generally Post-College Coaches.  Assistants may be Post-College, College and/or EHS Boys Lacrosse Team Members.
  • Requires US Lacrosse membership current and valid through end of the season
